Open Negative Initiative vs SmartConvert

The short answer. On Windows, or if you want a finished and supported product, SmartConvert, because this one is an alpha by one person and does not run on Windows at all. On a Mac, this one is free to download, with no watermark and no trial to run out, and the source of every version ships with it. Both refuse to apply a look, so that is not what separates them.

SmartConvert, by Filmomat, is a standalone film negative converter with no host application, no plugin. It reads common RAW types and TIFF, in colour and monochrome, and it is sold outright: no subscription, and what you buy stays yours. A watermarked demo is available for both platforms.

Where they agree

SmartConvert states that its algorithm avoids artificially altering the image: no LUTs, no effects, no attempt to emulate a look. That is the same position this application takes, stated differently: nothing decides on its own here, no preset is applied on import, and the automatic balances read quantiles and model nothing.

Which to choose

• On Windows → SmartConvert. This one does not run there.
• You want a finished, supported product → SmartConvert. This is an alpha built by one person, which is a real difference in what you can rely on.
• You would rather not pay at all → this one. Free, no watermark, nothing to unlock. SmartConvert is bought once and stays yours, which is the fairest of the paid models, and still a purchase.
• You want to see and change how the conversion works → this one. The source of each version ships with it, and every decision it makes is written down on this site instead of being described as an algorithm.
• You are not sure yet → try both on one of your own frames. The demo watermarks what it writes; this one has no limit at all, so getting it costs a download and ten minutes. To widen the field first, the table of all six tools is the place.

Windows and a finished, supported product are real reasons, and both point the other way. Set them aside and what is left is that one of these two costs nothing to find out, and the six-step guide gets you to an exported file without reading anything else.
